Chelsea Flower Show 2009

Chelsea fever is upon us again as the ultimate event in most garden designers year gets underway. The London Garden Designer will certainly be there to take notes on the years current trends and spot the triumphs or travesties.

Despite the economic downturn and with 5 fewer show gardens, the list of designers and sponsors look set to impress with their ground breaking and inspiring gardens. The London Garden Designer will certainly be looking forward to the gardens by Ulf Nordfjell – The Daily Telegraph Garden and Luciano Giubbilei sponsered by Laurent Perrier

Ulf Nordfjell returns to Chelsea after winning a gold 2 years ago. Ulf's designs are strongly influenced by the landscape of Sweden, his homeland. His planting is restrained, naturalistic - in the spirit of nature rather than mimicking it. Sweden is suggested by the designer's use of beautiful natural materials, including timber and granite. They are strong, elegant and sustainable and that is how Ulf wants his designs to be, whether in a public space or a private garden.

Luciano's work is characterised by simple, clean symmetrical lines. He uses trees and hedges clipped into strong, geometric forms to achieve an uncluttered, modern and sophisticated look, particularly suited to urban gardens. He rarely uses flowers but is beginning to include them in a controlled way. Luciano compares designing gardens to composing music – all of the elements that make up a garden are equally important and must be in tune with each other to create an atmosphere.
