North London Garden Design

Palmers Green Garden

This client in Palmers Green, North London was looking for a garden designer to work alongside the builders and architects on their extensive refurbishment. The brief was for a traditional, romantic style of garden, that would have a number of entertaining areas, a hot tub close to the house, a built in BBQ, water features, a pergola to support the established Wisteria and a garden room.

As a garden designer it was important to reflect the surrounding North London architecture that was predominantly yellow London stocks and pressed reds. These were therefore specified for all the boundary walls, pergola and retaining patio wall, with complimentary sandstone as the main paving material.

As the garden was large, it was relatively easy to divide it into an upper patio area with formal lawn, a central pergola and seating area that then opened onto a mini orchard with garden room at the rear.

The overall design concept ensured that there were glimpses through to the different areas, thereby engaging and maintaining interest as you walk through the garden, encouraging you to venture beyond.

The boundary fencing was in a poor state and was replaced with Jacksons Fine Fencing, (guaranteed for 25 years). The upper boundary fencing was rebuilt with London yellow stock brick walls that enclosed the space and gave it a courtyard feel. The hot tub was craned over the house (accompanied by neighbourly gasps) and positioned adjacent to the patio, below the retaining wall in order to disguise it.

The planting was key in this traditional garden, with plenty of flowering herbaceous plants intermingled with ornamental grasses, climbers and a few structural shrubs. The orchard area was created with six fruit trees under planted with clipped box hedging and bulbs added for seasonal interest. This North London garden is filled with hidden delights and details, as a designer it was a project I very much enjoyed being part of and look forward to seeing it grow and mature.
