Soho Roof Terrace Design
The views from this roof terrace are spectacular, encompassing a 270 degree panorama across Westminster, with the London Eye, House of Parliament and St James Park as the back drop. Our job was to create a roof garden that would soften the surrounding architecture, but in no way detract from it. The clients naturally use the terrace for entertaining throughout the year, so practical requirements such as an outdoor kitchen, heaters, and retractable sunshades also needed to be included.

The challenge as with many roof terraces, is designing a space that works within the weight and access limitations, yet looks unified, and not just a series of individual planters. We resolved this by reusing existing metal planters wrapped around the perimeter, but cladding them in a continuous run of cedar horizontal battens, thereby tying the whole space together. We also included a raised intensive green roof area with tall perennial grasses and bulbs that the client could walk through via stepping-stones to the outdoor kitchen. Feature designer planters from Atelier Vierkant and Bronzino were placed carefully to enhance the wrap around planting. The plants used are predominantly herbaceous perennials, grasses and Mediterranean shrubs to provide seasonal interest, and gentle movement in the breezy environment. A sea of tulip and allium bulbs has been planted to bring early Spring and Summer flowering colour.
