St Johns Wood Garden Design

A challenging site has resulted in a creative, transitional journey through and around this now delightful St Johns Wood garden. Situated in the leafy residential area of North London, the main priority behind the concept of the garden was to ensure a pleasurable suburban hideaway with a strong emphasis on design.

Taking inspiration from England's majestic forestry, the existing Beech trees became the focal point from which the garden developed. A dense copse of indigenous trees frame the left hand garden boundary and provide a soft backdrop against which the terraced beds stand out.

By integrating bold drifts of planting along the subtle oak terracing, and curved, sweeping beds, the garden produces maximum impact with minimal maintenance. The atmospheric design, combines three distinct areas : woodland shade, drought tolerant beds, and lush terraces. Providing a retreat in the form of a pergola constructed using green oak beams, the overall combination of strong wood elements with soft floral tones helps create a subtle contrast of colour, texture and pattern.

The brief requested by the client included one specific instruction; for the garden to be designed in such a way that the view can be enjoyed both from a bird's eye view whilst also at ground level - due to the client spending the majority of their time in the kitchen, which is situated on the first floor. Bearing these considerations in mind, the layout was done in a distinct style; noticeably the curved path of the paved slabs, drawing your attention to the rear of the garden.

The outdoor area has been designed with the environment in mind by using solid new oak sleepers for structural features in order to retain soil, create steps, and to produce a base for the composting area and shed. In addition, bark mulch has been used over all planted areas to help retain moisture and suppress weeds whilst maintaining its striking aesthetics.

Developing this St Johns Wood garden into a unique habitat creates a breath a fresh forest air in the middle of the city, creating its own signature look thanks to the detail applied throughout its design.
