Highgate Wood Garden Design

These clients are a professional couple that work long hours in the city. Their brief was to create a calm place to relax, whilst following the minimal and elegant lines of the house. The kitchen, an extension done earlier, focuses its views out onto the garden with wide folding doors opening onto a patio, and a picture window that opens out onto the upper garden level. We took inspiration from the interior wallpaper, and introduced a feature wall of blended mosaic tiles with Cor-ten strips to unify the patio area with the new porcelain tiled floor. The garden design then follows through the use of Cor-ten as step risers, and vertical strips on the Cedar slatted fence to mirror the lower patio.

Clean lines and soft planting at both ends, divide the garden to give an effect of depth from the kitchen whilst accommodating the change in levels across the garden. At the sunniest part of the garden we have created a wide area for family and friends as requested, with cedec gravel for a more soft and textured approach. We retained the existing Fig tree that creates a wonderful sculptural silhouette and casts beautiful patterns onto the smooth textured cedec. Part of the existing fence was painted in dark grey to add further depth to the garden and make it disappear. A row of pleached Liquidambars screen the unsightly views and create again a clean and elegant line, introducing fabulous interest at autumn time. This garden tucked away behind Highgate wood, was a delight to work on, and we are grateful to the clients for following through our vision.
