Stoke Newington Garden

The owners of this garden in Stoke Newington were a young couple who both worked in the music industry, and wanted a garden that reflected their lifestyle- entertaining was key. The existing space was very overgrown and cramped, so we set about stripping the garden back to its skeleton framework. Once cleared, an attractive Cornus kousa was revealed and this formed a focal point in the garden.

The design is based on a grid layout, to create subtle divisions both vertically and horizontally. We also dug down to create a sunken space and allow more privacy from the neighbours- as this is always an important consideration in building terraced London gardens. The main focal axis is a striking orange Venetian plaster low wall that also provides additional seating at 40cm high. At right angles to this feature wall run poured concrete walls, which make up the grid formation and define the areas.

The boundary walls have been created from detailed strips and panels of Cor-Ten steel, with additional panels of horizontal Balau fencing. A built in Fire pit is hidden behind a raised section of concrete and provides instant heat at the flick of a switch.

Floating timber benches are also built from Balau hardwood, and provide ample seating for parties. A built in BBQ with full height storage cupboard adjacent, completes the picture.

Included in the final scheme are fully automated irrigation, lighting and speakers, which are all controlled via a sophisticated Rako wireless system. The lounge chairs are designed on a modular arrangement to create sun beds, sofas or individual seating- all bespoke and manufactured by a local upholsterer in weather proof fabric.

The planting is simple and the colour palette chosen to contrast against the burnt umbers and oranges of the hard landscaping, keeping maintenance low, yet allowing enough seasonal colour to be of visual interest. The finished garden, offers a contemporary, spacious outdoor space in the midst of a bustling Stoke Newington street.
